Why can't my wife use her no-claims discount on a second car?
My wife recently took over ownership of our son's car as a second car, but when insuring it was told her no-claims discount on her main car of some nine years wasn't transferable to the second car, and she had to start from scratch. Surely a current car's no-claim discount applies to the person and not just to a single vehicle?

No. Unless you take out a multi car insurance via www.primoplc.com or via www.Admiral.com, it's one policy for one car, each accumulating their own no-claims discounts. Any claim will increase the premiums on all a person’s policies, NCD or not.
