Can you recommend a small, comfortable replacement for our Volkswagen Passat?

Being a little older and having driven Volkswagen Passats over the last 10 years, we now want a slightly smaller car but with the same comfortable ride; however, the distributors I have spoken to tell me that their range smaller cars don't have the ride quality of a Passat. Are there comfortable small cars?

The most comfortable small car I have driven recently was the Chevrolet Spark on 14-inch wheels. It has remarkable ride quality for something so diminutive. Test and video (in the snow): www.honestjohn.co.uk/road-tests/chevrolet/chevrole.../
