Can you recommend an economical, safe lease car for use as a city commuter?

I presently lease a Nissan Micra Tekna through the NHS trust l work for. The trust will not be undertaking any further leasing agreements when mine runs out in June 2011. I have decided to take on a personal lease and have been doing some research of suitable cars but find the sheer volume of information confusing. l do a lot of city stop-start driving including commuting, plus some short journeys throughout the day and some motorway driving once monthly.

Basically, my requirements are safety, low running costs (i.e. 55mpg or more), style and cost (no more than £11,000). A 3-door would be fine unless the car is very small, and I need a boot that could accommodate a buggy. I also need to take a child car seat in the back as a fairly permanent fixture. I am considering the Toyota Aygo 5-door, Citroen C1 or C3. Any other suggestions? I would not consider another Micra. Although comfy, I found it quite heavy on petrol and that other drivers appear to treat Micra drivers like idiots.

The cars you list make sense as basic transport, plus the very similar Nissan Pixo and Suzuki Alto. Also consider a Suzuki Splash 1.0 for low tax and an upright driving position, the new Hyundai i10 1.0 Kappa for £0 tax, and the new FIAT 500 TwinAir, also £0 tax. However, though the 500 TwinAir is only 95g/km CO2, there are doubts that it is as fuel efficient as this implies, because it develops very little torque at low revs, necessitating third gear for 30mph and relatively high revs.
