Buying a new car. What would you recommend?

We have a 2006 Discovery with 80k on the clock and have been offered £12,500 as a trade in against a year old KIA Sorento KX2 with 11k on the clock.

I am attracted by the Kia 7 year warranty and 42mpg We want to avoid hefty repair bills. we were on the point of buying this when we saw that cars like the Volvo XC60 and BMW X3 depending on model can give about 50mpg.

We will be keeping the car for 5 years anyway and I wonder if a Volvo or BMW might be a better buy with better residuals at the end of 5 years although the KIA will still have a 2 year warranty left.

We like the 7 seat seat option with the KIA as we have two kids but could live without that. The Kia dealer is also offering 3 years servicing for £360. A 5 star euroncap is key to us.

Would you buy the Kia or would the other cars with maybe a better value at end of year 5 attract you? Or is there another car to consider?

We were offered the same trade in on a high spec Captiva but didn't like the gearbox.

You are not comparing like with like. The high mpg XC60 is 2WD and the results were only achieved in lab tests, not in real life. The current F25 X3 is excellent, but we only got 37mpg (1,000 mile test: www.honestjohn.co.uk/road-tests/bmw/bmw-x3-f25//). But to get a new X3 to a decent spec you will have to pay £10k - £15k more than you are paying for the Sorento. For latest real life mpg, see: www.honestjohn.co.uk/realmpg/
