Golf stalls when coming to a stop

My Golf (100,000 miles) goes through stages of just cutting out as I stop (at lights, roundabouts, parking, etc). It happily restarts. This happens about 40% of the time - when engine is warm and once it starts it continues until the car is left for some time. Typically, it never happens when in the garage (an independent) to be looked at. The fuel pump has been replaced, as has the coil and plugs and the car was recently serviced.

I would very much appreciate any suggestions or comments as it is proving very expensive to keep replacing bits without solving the problem.
