Mud and snow tyres

Comment is made on the advantage of winter tyres over standard tyres. I have a Honda CR-V fitted with M & S ( mud and snow). How do these fit in the equation?

If they have snowflake or mountain symbols on them then they are 'all weather tyres', legal in snow in Germany and Austria and can be left on the car all year. They just aren't as effective in snow as full winter tyres.
