Why are replacement keys so expensive?

Having mislaid one of my 2024 Renault Clio key cards I have been quoted £457 by a local Renault dealer for a replacement. While realising all the complexity and circuitry etc inside I think this is outrageous and I understand from Renault that this would be the same price at any Renault dealership. Obviously I 'll have to bite the bullet but I see there are lots of companies offering a replacement service. Are they kosher and presumably they'll need specialist equipment? Do you think that £457 is unreasonably high?

£457 to replace a key is very expensive, but unfortunately not an uncommon occurrence on modern cars. However a reputable automotive locksmith should be able to provide a replacement at a reduced cost, so we would advise searching locally for someone who can provide a quote.
