As a general rule, you can tell which PHEVs will provide decent fuel economy when driven on petrol alone by looking at the other non-hybrid models in the range. A large and heavy PHEV such as a Land Rover Defender is likely to be thirsty when driven on petrol alone. We would suggest looking at cars like the Ford Kuga, Mercedes C300e, BMW 330e, Peugeot 308 Hybrid 180 and Audi A3 TFSi e.
