Broken Renault Clio

Our Renault Clio has died. It made a whining noise before cutting out completely.
Does it have a cambelt? How do we check if it is broken?

Will the pistons hit the valves if the belt is broken and we turn the engine?

yes, has a timing belt. Yes, probably off. Pop the plastic cover on the end of the engine and have a look.
