Fusion feud
I have a 2007 Ford Fusion 1.6 TDCi Zetec. I am quite pleased with the car, particularly the fuel economy, (around 60 mpg at the moment) and the car has done about 23,000 miles. About 4 weeks ago, the car suddenly stopped; the breakdown services could not fix it, so they towed it to the Ford agent where I'd bought the car. I was informed that the exhaust gas recirculating valve had to be replaced. What is the function of this component and are failures of it common, particularly with this engine?

Recirculates unburned hydrocarbon crankcase fumes so they get combusted rather than emitted. Trouble is they can overwhelm the valve with sticky, treacly hydrocarbons and gum the whole thing up.
