Excessive oil consumption

I have a 58 plate Golf GT Sport 1.4 TSi and during the first 20,000 miles I did not need to add any engine oil between services.

Since then the engine is using about 1 litre of oil in every 4000 miles (there are no oil leaks). My VW main agent, who has been servicing the car, says that such consumption is normal.

Is my garage telling me the truth or should I be worried by such consumption? If there is a problem then I want to get it sorted out whilst still in warranty. The car has currently done 34,000 miles.
