Lack of power/ poor fuel consumption

My 1.8litre Duratec Mondeo is suffering from poor acceleration and high fuel consumption.

I have changed the spark plugs & fuel filter, but it has made no difference, do you have any suggestions? Could it be that the idle valve needs cleaning? If so - where do I find it?

These can have a manifold swirl flap problem. Get it checked because if the flaps break off it's goodbye to your engine and you might as well scrap the car. The other check is the cat converter. If that has broken up inside it will block the exhaust and lead to a severe drop in performance.
