Used, economical family car - what would you recommend?
I am looking to trade in my 2003 Seat Leon Tdi and am in the market for a used mid / large sized family car.
My commute equates to around 300 miles a week and we also travel longer distances at weekends seeing friends and family, so are looking for an economical car. Ideally I would like something which returns upwards of 55mpg.
We also have a young son and so the car needs to be able to swallow reasonable amounts of child related kit!
I am looking to part exchange the Leon and have a budget of £10-12K.
So far cars on my radar include Audi A3, VW Golf, Mazda 6 and the Nissan Qashqai.

An A3 and a Golf are at best the same size and at worst smaller than your Leon. A Mazda 6 is Mondeo size. (So is a Mondeo.) Qashqais stand tall but are't hugely spacious inside (unless you go for the +2), and they are quite dear used.
