Buying a new small economical car -what would you recommend?

I am looking to replace my 11-year-old Astra which is costing too much. I am thinking about a small car which won't cost more than £8000 OTR. Ideally something with a long warranty / service package. I need good fuel ecomony to make it worthwhile (bearing in mind I can get 40 mpg in my 1.6 petrol!). What would you recommend? Thanks.
