Shifting circumstance
I was interested to read the letter in your column from RH of Alresford. I have owned three Jazz: the older model in both manual and CVT form, and the new Jazz with the I-Shift gearbox. The older model with the CVT was an excellent car, but with very high rev noise as you gathered speed, until the speed of the car "caught up" so to speak. Also, the petrol consumption was disappointing to say the least, once in the winter, getting down into the high 20s average mpg. My present new Jazz is a vast improvement in every respect. As RH said, the I-Shift box is smooth, and I certainly am very pleasantly surprised at how user friendly it is. I covered about 1,800 miles between July and September, and the average miles per gallon, with touring and local use, was 56.5 mpg so far, (admittedly, in the summer temperatures), a figure that I got absolutely got nowhere near at any time with the CVT box. My previous car, a diesel Yaris, also had a multimode gearbox, but was nowhere near as smooth as the Jazz. I shudder to think what the mpg would have been had Honda fitted a torque converter box to the Jazz, as much as I like that type of gearbox. Poor fuel consumption when torque converter gearboxes are mated to smaller engines is common knowledge. The harsh suspension of the older model Jazz appears also to have been addressed with the new model. So, in my humble opinion, well done Honda, for a fantastic, easy to use, economical and, as ever superbly built car. Highly recommended, including the I-Shift.

Honest John
I got 42.94mpg over 396 miles, sometimes driving at 80+, sometimes with up to 6 people in the car, from a Honda City (the saloon version of the Jazz) fitted with the 1.5 120PS I-VTEC engine and the 5-speed torque converter autobox. (Jazz with this engine and transmission are actually built at Swindon for the South African market.). Driving the way you do I’d probably have got about 50mpg. But Honda will be very pleased to hear of your experience with the I-Shift because it is facing some consumer opposition.
