A legend in its own lurchtime
In July, I scrapped my Rover 216 automatic for a new Toyota Yaris with multimode transmission. I was amazed by the lack of power it seemed to have and by the gear changes that seemed to be out of line with speed. A couple of week's later I availed myself of Toyota's after care service where the MMT computer was re-programmed. This did effect an improvement. However, I am far from satisfied. Furthermore, I am nervous about whether the car would get up a steep hill in MMT mode as one of the Toyota staff happened to comment that they had driven one recently and had found it quite scary going uphill. I have realised that I have to change the way I drive to accommodate a new system, and have done so but I am unable to stop the kangaroo jerks that it does intermittently at low speeds, such as turning some corners and in a traffic queue. The salesman at the Toyota dealer has been very helpful. Last week, I borrowed an identical model that had just come in and that performed in the same way. I cannot believe that it is acceptable for this to be a standard feature of a car that people are going to buy for urban driving; what is your view? I understand that I am not alone in my dissatisfaction with the MMT system. The dealer is offering to buy back the car but I lose the whole of the scrappage amount and that does not seem right when the problem lies with Toyota in my view. It is interesting and somewhat telling that the new IQ has a standard automatic gear box. What is your view?

Some drivers just cannot get on with these automated manual transmissions. I'll try to explain: The car 'lurches' on upchanges because, during the change, the ECU damps the accelerator to protect the gearbox against torque reactions. If you anticipate this you can learn to drive quite smoothly. If you push the accelerator harder in frustration that will only make the lurching worse. Instead of an MMT the IQ has a very smooth CVT transmission that works well.
