Bling and buy sales
The internet is awash with complaints across the world that appear to relate to the combination of 19" wheels and low profile runflat tyres. I have never in the last 27 years of my driving experience ever heard of any thing like this before and, as you pointed out, that if it is this combination then it is inadequately designed and not fit for purpose. In my opinion BMW are culpable for the fault

But, in fairness, so is Audi and so is anyone else who supplies cars on rims that are so vulnerable, even Vauxhall. I have been campaigning against this stupidity for the sake of bling for years. The only place they are of some use is on a racetrack. They are not suitable for UK road use, given the variation in road surfaces, condition and obstructions. They provide less steering feel, cause serious discomfort, can lead to the car taking off over minor bumps like cat's eyes and can be lethal in the wet. But if car manufacturers did not fit them when customers ask for them (and take the profit) then they would leave those sales wide open to accessory manufacturers.
