Beetle investation?
My 40-year-old unmarried daughter has had a VW Golf CL since new in 1994. The car lives in a heated garage and has done approx 25 thousand miles. In spite of regular servicing apparently the gear change has become stiff and my daughter would prefer a car that is automatic and has A/C. She is keen to buy a VW Beetle but I would value your advice as to whether this would be a sensible purchase in view of the small mileage she does around London with occasional trips further a field. Her garage is just big enough for the VW Golf and so any other car you consider worth her trying must be about the same size. How would you rate a Honda Jazz?

The Golf is worth at least £2,000 on scrappage. It's very hard to judge the corners of Beetles so it will get bashed in London. The latest Jazz is an automated manual, not an automatic and some drivers can't get on with it. A Hyundai i10 1.2 is a good little auto for London. A Honda Insight and a Toyota Prius are London Congestion Charge exempt. A Suzuki Swift 1.5 GLX auto is a terrific little car, if you like the looks.
