March mellow

I am now a widower in my mid seventies and still wish to do a certain amount of convenient motoring, short and long distances. It seems to me that the best type of vehicle to get would be a smallish car - Ford Focus size. As I am able to afford something fairly good to indulge myself, please would you suggest a few cars (automatic drive) to consider that would give very good ride quality, ease of driving, quietness, smoothness, comfort, good equipment, economy, reliability. Not much to ask.
