Naughtomatic

I have a 2002 Jaguar XJ8 3.2, automatic, which twice in the last 3 weeks has failed to engage the gears. The first time the car had been left standing for 4 weeks while we were away. When I went to back out of my drive it felt like nothing was attached to the end of the selection lever – just moved backwards and forwards. I switched off the engine, restarted and all was well. Last week I tried to reverse out of my brother’s drive when the same thing occurred. The same action again solved the problem. I have taken the car to the non-franchised Jag specialist who has serviced my cars for 15 or so years now and he can find nothing wrong and has not heard of this problem before. I wonder if you have any suggestions? It is OK at present but it has left me feeling rather uneasy.

Another reader just e-mailed. The fault is with a micro switch. Jag dealers want £275 to replace it. And independent should be able to replace it at a fraction of the cost.
