Catch 22

I have a 2004 Mercedes 500SL. I recently broke the small plastic catch on my centre arm rest console, I could not open it so I pulled a bit hard and the end piece of the plastic hook snapped off. I have tried superglue but it does not hold. In desperation I resorted to my local MD dealer and they have quoted (hope you are sitting down) £771.10 to replace as they say I need new centre console and they need to take half the car apart to fit it. Can you suggest a cheaper alternative?

In that case the only sensible thing you can do is find some way of fabricating a catch and fixing it yourself.
