I am coming to you for some advice as an avid reader of your column. My sister purchased a Saab 9-3 TID Sport (150bhp) in January of this year. From the day she collected it she has experienced problems as detailed in the attached email, which is a letter she wrote to the dealer principal following many conversations with the service department. You will note that a local SAAB dealer has advised that a new turbo is required, while the dealer’s "independent" inspector has advised this is not the case, merely a change of the inlet hose to the turbo. I can confirm that the hose has been replaced but the turbo continues to leak oil. I arranged for the car to undergo a full survey at a local motorsport specialist company who repair performance cars and build rally cars as part of their business. They have written a report advising that the turbo does indeed need replacing as there is an oil leak from the turbo, and the heat exchanger also requires replacement as it is leaking coolant (I note your website mentions this can be an issue on the autos). My sister is now between a rock and a hard place, with the dealer refusing to accept that any fault exists, yet we have an independent inspector report to say otherwise. From reading your column, I suspect you may advise that we force them to do the remedial work or threaten to get the work done and sue them through the small claims court, but I would like your take on it before we go any further. Assuming you are still within 6 months of the purchase date, write by
recorded delivery to the dealer accusing him of having sold you a car with a fault that was developing at the time of purchase. Tell them that if they do not replace the turbo/intercooler or give you your money back you will have the work done independently and will use the small claims track of the county court to sue him for the cost.
