I am looking for a large 4x4. Having read reviews including your own I am drawn to the VW Touareg 3.0 diesel but to get the spec I want I need the Altitude spec, which will cost me £20k. For this money it seems I can get a nice spec Porsche Cayenne 4.5 S and have change to fit an LPG kit should I do any significant mileage, the cost of which I think would recover at resale if I do it privately. I have already owned a 911 and a Boxster and found them reliable and running costs to be reasonable if serviced via specialists rather than main dealer. Is the Cayenne a different story or can it be run at reasonable costs? I had an LPG conversion on a Range Rover V8.

A friend of mine has a Cayenne 4.5S and, apart from some expensive irritations, it has been reliable. More in car-by-car breakdown at hjuk. I don't recommend LPG conversions not approved by manufacturers, particularly on any engine with variable valve timing designed for the burn characteristics of petrol, not LPG. An old Range Rover V8 was a very simple pushrod engine, dating back to the 1960s Buick Skylark. Jeep 4.0 straight sixes are also pushrod, simple and easily adapted to running on LPG. I’d better add that Beside which, predictably, the UK government is increasing the tax and reducing the benefits of running on LPG, just like it did the last time round.
