What SUV for use in the States?

My son is about to spend a year working in Ohio, USA and will be driving between 300 and 400 miles each week. Because of the harsh winter conditions he feels he will need a reliable 4 wheel drive SUV.

What would you recommend and how should he acquire it bearing in mind he doesn't want to purchase it outright so that he can avoid the hassle of disposing of it upon his return to the UK. Would it be possible to rent/hire economically for 12 months?

He'll be able to get a lease deal in the US. Best bet either a Mazda CX-5 AWD or a Honda CR-V AWD.
