Should I pick the Land Rover Freelander 2 or the Skoda Yeti?
A friend of my father's claims that the Land Rover Freelander engine is due to be replaced this year. Is this true or is he confusing this with the new TD4e setup? Which car would you recommend between the Skoda Yeti 170 Elegance and Freelander 2 S? They cost about the same and we are torn between the speed and cheekiness of the Yeti, and the image and potential residuals of the Freelander.

We’re not aware of any new engines being introduced into the Freelander 2 range so it’s possible your friend is referring to what was called the TD4e when it was first introduced, but is now the default engine in the Freelander 2. It’s the same 2.2-litre diesel but with stop-start which means it’s more economical and has lower CO2 emissions.
In terms of recommendations between the Freelander 2 S and the Skoda Yeti 170 Elegance 4x4, it’s a tough decision to make. The Freelander is an excellent vehicle and incredibly capable off-road but the Yeti is far better value for money and you’d be getting the top of the range model compared with the entry-level Freelander 2. In terms of economy and CO2 emissions, there’s little between them but the Yeti has the edge and is more efficient. Residual values for both are similar at between 40-45 per cent but in this instance we’d recommend the Skoda over the Freelander as the Yeti Elegance is far better equipped, reliable and would be far easier to sell in the future than a Freelander S.
