My BMW 525TD Estate Auto gives a hard ride that transfers every bump in the road to the passengers. I assume this is caused by the low profile tyres on 19" wheels. Is this correct, and if so what size would give the gentlest ride?

19" wheels with, I guess, 35 or 40 profile tyres on this car are
ridiculous, especially if the tyres are stiff-shouldered runflats. Switch to 16" pr 17" wheels with a more rubber between the rims and
the road. You will also benefit from longer tyre life and far less likelihood of the wheel rims being bucked by potholes or disintegrating speed cushions.
