I am sure that you are aware of he problem that exists with the DPF on diesel Zafiras. The Zafira in question (Elite 150 bhp) was bought brand new in May 2006 from Phoenix Vauxhall. Within 500 miles the engine had gone into limp mode when overtaking on a country lane nearly causing an accident. From that moment on there seemed to be conflicting stories coming from the dealer and Vauxhall concerning how the problem could be solved. The DPF was regenerated at the garage that time and then subsequent times until they removed the exhaust until a software update could be provided. The software update (I was told) would ensure that rather waiting for the DPF to fill-up it would regenerate when half full. The exhaust was replaced, software updated and the DPF filled up on numerous other occasions. The issues seem to occur with the types of journey that you undertake. Unless there are regular long distance journeys where you can exceed certain engine revs consistently over a twenty to thirty minute period the DPF filter can never be regenerated. When we purchased the vehicle we pointed out the type of journeys that would be undertaken (school runs etc) and at not time indicated that we undertook regular long journeys. Up to this point the garage have not been able to resolve the problem satisfactorily but have helped to regenerate the DPF. The last time they said the engine oil had been contaminated and would have to be changed which I agreed but I was somewhat dismayed when it was pointed out it would be at my cost. I have said previously to the garage and the Vauxhall Customer care line that the car is not fit for purpose but was told that the brochure indicated that it was not suitable for short journeys and that the issue was with Phoenix (according to Vauxhall). I have now found a PDF brochure of the Zafira from when we bought the car and in no way does it state that it was unsuitable for any type of driving. I have contacted other owners one of which was given a new top of the range car but he did fight them earlier on in the car's ownership. It is only at this point that I realise I am being left with a car that is going to be unreliable and cost more than originally anticipated. The reason behind buying the car was not so much the economy but more the performance and when working this is still an excellent vehicle. I am now considering whether I have a legal claim against Phoenix and/or Vauxhall. My claim would not be ridiculous as I realise we have had value from the car but I am concerned that it has been in the garage many times and this is unlikely to stop. As such feel that a case against Phoenix for not saying the car was no suitable for our driving style would be valid. I would want to exchange the vehicle with some additional money for a newer petrol model where the DPF issue does not exist. When I bought the car I was expecting to keep it for at least five years. If the DPF could be removed then the car would be great but if not I feel I would want to change. I think I have been at fault in giving them too many chances to fix the car rather than digging my heels in when it first became a problem. I look forward to your response, regards

This is very common with the Alfa Romeo 1.9 diesel engine, particularly in Zafiras that are typically used for short runs from cold. It's why a lot of taxi firms have switched from diesel Astras and Zafiras to petrol. Really, it should become a BBC Watchdog issue. But that's down to enough owners reporting it to BBC Watchdog. I can't do that for you.

I have read your general advice. Can you advise how the regeneration of the DPF in a Freelander 2 works? Does it regenerate anyway when one goes on a long drive or will it wait until it is partly clogged...
You recommend running at higher revs to help a DPF to regenerate. I drive a Volvo V70 AWD 2.4d. At 2,000 rpm I travel at 60 mph. At 2,300 rpm I travel at 70 mph. How do you suggest I exceed the speed limit...
