More work and no play
I had a problem with my car. On the garage receipt was noted,
“This vehicle has a faulty gearbox which has caused front oil seal failure. Although the seal has been replaced the gearbox repair has been declined by the customer, no warranty is being offered as it is felt that the same problem will occur again.” The operator who dealt with me actually did call me half way through the job and asked me to come inside the workshop to show me my gearbox has an excessive play on the input shaft. I was not convinced it was a problem, so I declined the gearbox repair. However, since I am not a car mechanic, I have no idea to argue over his finding, especially as my car was in the middle of the repair. I need your advice to point me into the right direction to where/who I can turn to for a recognised technical explanation of a gearbox diagnosis so that I can present this to the garage's head office for a full explanation.

If there was movement on the input shaft then a replacement seal would not last for long, oil would leak onto the clutch again and the clutch would fail again. That's what the repairer was trying to tell you.
