Horse chestnut
We have just had our much loved Mondeo Ghia estate written off by a "sorry I didn't see you” driver - fortunately no serious injuries, but a big bang. As a result we need a replacement quite quickly. We had been considering buying a vehicle suitable for towing sometime this spring, but now don't have time for proper research. Hence this letter. We need something that can comfortably tow a solid horse box with two 600kg horses in, but will have to be sensible for everyday use as well and comfortable (12k miles/year). Our budget is about £14k. Am considering a LR Discovery. Any ideas?

A much-repeated question. The lowest CO2 and best economy for the highest weight towed. I don’t think the average 2,000kg towing capability of a 2.0 litre SUV will be enough for two 600kg horses and the heavy trailer. The highest rated small SUV is the Ford Kuga at 2,100kg, currently on offer new at brokers like www.drivethedeal.com However, the alternative to a big SUV like a Disco or a Shogun is a pick-up. Isuzus are rated to 3,000kg and have excellent, economical 2.5 or 3.0 litre I-TEQ engines. We've got two.
