Bangers for your bucks

My son is just about to take his driving test and I would like to buy him a SAFE, economical, low insurance group first car. I had thought about a Peugeot 106 but reading your review has put me off. I was going to buy a second-hand car £1,000-£1,500 but safety is so important I’ll stump up if I have to, any ideas?

In this price range it's very hard to find good value as almost everything old and in a low insurance group is over priced. But a Fiesta 1.25 16v is a decent little car that's actually quite good to
drive, despite their propensity to rust (especially in the front A pillars). Avoid the 1.3 8v pushrod engine like the plague it came from.
