My Focus was involved in a minor crunch whilst parked in our local doctor’s carpark, a car reversing out of a parking slot backed into the my driver's door. The damage was very minor, two very small creases in the bottom panel and a fist sized indention in the top of the panel where it was hit by the spoiler on the boot of the other car. The other party admitted liability, we exchanged addresses and insurance details in a reasonably amicable fashion. I advised my insurance company and within 20 minutes their authorised repairer was on the phone wanting to collect the car. I've never known such enthusiasm, a 'sign of the times' I thought, there're short of work. I explained the minor nature of the damage, repairs were estimated to take about 3 days. My car was duly collected and a loan car was left for my use. So far, repairs have taken 8 days and when I queried the delay I was told that they were replacing the door skin. When I expressed suprise the reason I was given was, “it’s a nice car and you don't want a door full of filler.” To some extent this is fair comment but being a cynical old duffer and bearing in mind the very minor nature of the damage, I cannot help but think that they are making a mountain out of a very small repair to enable them to extract more money out of the insurance company who are paying the bill.

They are stretching it out to extend the period you are in the hire car,
which is from a fleet run by them. This is what is forcing up insurance premiums for all of us. The ABI took action by maximising what its members would pay for credit hire cars. So now the credit hire outfits are extending the hire periods any way they can.
