Ishifty fingers

I too bought a new Honda Civic with I-SHIFT gearbox earlier this year. Trading in a faultless 2005 Civic with conventional automatic gearbox was the worst day's work I ever did. Trying to hurry the I-SHIFT, for example to nip into a space on a roundabout, can result in being caught in between gears - the engine revs up but you don't go anywhere - a highly dangerous situation I am sure you will agree. Furthermore, there is no 'P' mode on the selector. In over fifty years car ownership I have never applied the handbrake in my garage, preferring to leave the car in reverse gear, but despite leaving it in reverse this car recently crept backwards overnight to come into contact with the electrically operated garage door. This resulted in damaged paintwork to the rear bumper and hatchback when the door was raised next morning. I bought the car with a view to long-term ownership, but now cannot wait until it is economically sensible to offload it. The moral of all this - never buy a car on the strength of a twenty minute test drive.

The I-Shift has now been improved. And anyway, you can always use the paddles to make a hasty start. But from January you can get a Civic with a standard 5-speed torque converter auto. Drove it in November. Some info about that in car-by-car breakdown at www.honestjohn.co.uk
