Small, but perfectly foured

I am thinking of changing my car in the spring 2009 and would like some advice on the new purchase. At present I drive a 2.2 diesel Nissan X-Trail. However I would like something smaller. So far I have considered a Suzuki SX4 and a Toyota Urban Cruiser. Can you suggest any other suitable choices? I need a high seating position and would prefer a 4-wheel drive. My mileage does not exceed 10,000 a year, so would also welcome advice on diesel versus petrol.
