Can Fusion?
I am puzzled why you, and other reviewers, are so reluctant to recommend Ford Fusions? I have a 2006/56 Fusion Zetec TDCi 1.6, do about 12k miles a year and, except for one fill up in the hard weather in January, never get less than 60 mpg; often 63-65. I have never found any problems. It cruises at 65-70mph and is quite perky. When down in Northumberland I parked next to two Fusions and got talking to the owners. They all thought they were great, especially with VED of only £30. What we all like is the ease in getting in and out of the car and the reasonable size of the boot. The only downside is lack of storage inside.

Seconds ago, I just did, and do regularly. It meets specific requirements for a small stationwagon with no rear load sill and slightly higher seating. So you can't have been reading the column.
In other respects, it's not as good as other cars like the Jazz and the Note. But you have picked the right engine. That perks up the Fiesta even more because the Fiesta has far better roadholding and handling than the Fusion so can corner faster and save even more fuel by maintaining constant speed.
