Uncover operation

Is this a situation you have heard of? A driver is stopped by police who say his car is uninsured. He is given 7 days to produce documents. He then discovers his policy had lapsed in October 2009. No renewal documents had been received and the insurer admits they were sent to a completely different address. The driver has various other policies with the insurer and no attempt was made to contact him by the ‘high net worth’ team who look after these policies. The insurer is taking the stand that the onus is on driver to know when his policy is due for renewal. The policy had been held for many years and always renewed with payment being made by cheque. What could the driver do please to help his case with police?

Yes, happens a lot, and it's 6 points and a big fine. Anyone can check if their car is insured simply by visiting www.askmid.co.uk , then entering their registration. It is essential you do this a couple of days after a policy is renewed, to make sure it has been. And, if you pay by monthly standing order or direct debit, you should check monthly.
