The wheel reason is…
Having previously enjoyed an Audi A4 2.7TDI (190BHP) Multitronic and returned an average fuel consumption over 25,000 miles of 43.5 MPG, which pretty much matched the manufacturers data, I recently changed to an A6 Avant 2.7TDI (190) Le Mans Edition Multitronic. The manufacturer fuel data indicates 38.8 MPG for Combined Cycle. Over the past 3 months and 8,000 miles (total of 13,000 miles, as I bought it as a demonstrator with 5,000 miles on the clock), I am achieving only 32.5 MPG. My journeys are 90% Motorway and long distance and I do not drive the car hard, typically cruising at 75 -78mph (as I did in the A4). Whilst clearly I expect the consumption to be worse than the A4 due to the A6's larger size and weight, I am still disappointed in what I am achieving. Before I contact my local supplier (Sinclair Audi of Bridgend which is by the way a fantastic dealer and always has looked after me superbly) can you comment, or make any suggestions please, should I expect better?

The reason is probably the plain daft 19" wheel and tyre combination. They are going to be a real drag.
