My friend's 1990H Toyota MR 2 with 50,000 miles starts OK hot or cold. It runs perfectly. Now and then it stalls at junctions at working temperature. The throttle then has to be held to the floor, the engine turned over when it will eventually clear and start with a cloud of black smoke belching from the exhaust. It then runs perfectly until the next time. Any ideas?

I suggested probably hydrocarbons blocking the throttle system. Pour a bottle of fuel system cleaner into the tank and run it exclusively on Shell V-Power petrol. D.D. tried this and the car ran a lot better.
