I'm trying to decide between two cars for sale at the same price; one is light, fast, uncomplicated and uncomfortable, the other is heavy, fast, complicated and comfortable. I know about Morgan +8s but I know nothing about Aston Martins? My question is why should I not buy the Aston? I worry that it might depreciate too much or break the bank with running costs.

A friend of mine bought a famous footballer's old DB9 a couple of years ago as a treat to himself on selling his business. He had a few niggles (you always do with an Aston and always have done), and depreciation has been steep, but he has enjoyed the car enough to feel he got value for money. AM dealer HWM is just down the road from me and the cars on display outside look stunningly gorgeous. But always remember, the dealer margins in these cars are colossal. Often £10k in a transaction. You don't want to be handing £10k of your hard-earned for nothing to some ex public schoolboy in a suit. Guys like www.tomhartley.com tend to offer the fairest deal given the current state of the market. And Astons do come up at auction. Check out www.british-car-auctions.co.uk I haven't written anything about Morgans because I prefer not to endure the discomfort of driving one, but slow production in Malvern means they do hold their value better than Astons.
