Whines and screams
My Honda Jazz ES is just 6 months old. It developed a noise on Friday afternoon after taking my grandchildren home. The noise made me stop the car just as I started to pull away. I looked round the car and could see nothing wrong. I got back in the car and made my journey home. The high-pitched noise continued all the time. It stopped when I engaged the clutch. The noise progressed as I pulled away. I called Honda and booked the car in. They called me to say the car was ready for collection after one and half hours. I was then told it was the gearbox bearings. I was told I would need to do a total of 6,000 miles and bring the car back when they would replace the gearbox oil.

The old Jazz had a problem with transmission bearings after 4 - 6 years. I guess it was running-in swarf that eventually grinds itself up into tiny particles that get into the bearings. Honda is now very wisely asking you to bring the car back to have the transmission oil drained (together with the running-in swarf) after 6,000 miles before the particles have been ground up small enough to get into the bearings. Makes sense to me and should prevent trouble later on.
