2 into 4
I am thinking of trading in a 57 Mondeo (10k miles) for a smaller 4x4 with good reliability and good performance and road holding. Suggestions would be welcome.

Not many 4x4s are actually smaller. You could look at a Toyota Urban Cruiser 1.4 D-4D, which is the most economical and lowest CO2. Suzuki does a SWB Grand Vitara and the tiny Jimny. Daihatsu has withdrawn supplies of the Terios to the UK because of the gap between Sterling and the Yen. More car-like, there's the FIAT Sedici, Suzuki SX4 and FIAT Panda 4x4.

Chunky and quirky looks. A rare sight on UK roads. 1.4 D-4D AWD surprisingly enjoyable to drive.
