Alarmalert

I have a 5 month old Golf Mk VI which from new has had a faulty alarm that occasionally goes off for no apparent reason. The dealer has tried some fixes but the problem still exists. The dealer says that VW is aware of a problem but is unable to come up with a permanent cure at the moment. Is this a common problem, and what recourse do I have against the dealer or the manufacturer if this problem is not fixed?

The Mk IV Golf (two generations ago) had this problem that gained some notoriety on BBC Watchdog and I proposed a solution to VW that had worked in my Mk II. First switch the vents to recirculate. Then turn the heater to max heat. Then direct all unclosable vents to the footwell. Then close all closable vents. That minimises air disturbances inside the car, which are usually what sets the alarm off. Your rights in English and Scottish law are against the supplier, not the manufacturer.
