The white stuff
I have driven various Vauxhalls over the past 20 years or so and have always found them to drive well in the snow when fitted with winter tyres. My current car is a Meriva and it does not perform well at all in the snow. It can easily get going in 6 to 8 inches of snow but is then very difficult to hold in a straight line as it continually weaves and slithers from side to side. I thought initially it might be due to a short wheelbase but have checked figures and find that it has a longer wheelbase than many larger cars. However it does have a narrow track and I wonder if this could be causing the instability.

No. The problem is it does not have soft compound winter tyres that expel the compacted snow from the treads. If you want a car to work in the snow, buy a separate set of four wheels with soft compound winter tyres and fit them to the car from November to March.
