In theTelegraph, of 14-1-2010 there is a photo of a Range Rover in a ditch. It appears to have been fitted with low profile tyres. Would these tyres have had any detrimental effect on the handling of the vehicle in ice and snow?

Without a shadow of a doubt. The treads of wide, low profile tyres simply fill with compacted snow and turn into skidplates. High profile soft compound winter tyres are more effective in snow than four wheel drive.
