I’m in the process of buying a car. What I need is a small car to use in the city to and from work. However, since I live in northern Italy, I will need to make a couple of trips to London every year. So a car that’s too small with a small engine perhaps is not completely suitable. I’m thinking about the new Toyota Yaris 1.4 Diesel. Do you think this is a good car for my needs? i.e mostly daily use but with added longer journeys infrequently (probs some motorway driving)?

If you are going to use a car mostly in a city, then avoid anything with a diesel particulate filter because it will choke up. But Toyota has now got its petrol engines under 120g/k, so you could consider a Yaris 1.33 6-speed petrol. Or why not a Toyota IQ? We tested it in Milan, and were pulling 170kmh on the autostradas even in the 1.0 version. Video at: www.honestjohn.co.uk/road_tests/index.htm?id=360
