Beaten, not stirred

I took my car my 2005 VW Passat 2.0TDI 140 Sport to the local VW dealer due to an oil pressure loss/emergency warning light appearing, combined with a loss of braking servo assistance. Oil was correct grade (supplied by VW) and is still topped up to full level. I have just been advised that (at 97,000 miles) the only option is a new engine supplied and fitted at a cost of circa £7,000 due to an oil pump failure. Instrument failures have been eliminated. I bought the car from a dealer a year ago for £8,750. Needless to say I am speechless. There seems to be some evidence from your website and from VW forums that this is due to a design/manufacturer’s fault. Is there any recourse to VW? It looks like there is a high failure rate of this oil pump by 100,000 miles. I have driven/owned several VWs in the past which I have found very reliable and never seen or heard of this type of fault previously. It seems that VW has been selling this model with an unreasonably low life expectancy. The oil pump costs about £120 but VW advise the failure is not reparable due to probable secondary damage to bearings from lack of oil circulation. I expect to have some repair bills with a second-hand car but £7,000 seems beyond all reasonable bounds. Needless to say it shakes one’s confidence in any recent VWs/Audis/Seats where this diesel engine is also fitted.

I blame the stupid longlife service regime allowed on these cars, coupled with the dealer short cut of siphoning the old oil out through the dipstick tube. This leaves a residue of tarry clagg in the sump that eventually chokes the oil strainer so the pump can't even pump the oil round the engine.
