We propose to buy a second hand car for our 23-year-old son after he has passed his test in the next couple of months. He lives in Leeds LS4 2HG and will park the car outside his house. Budget is £1,500 to £2,000 but would go to £2,500 for a good buy. Please recommend good reliable small hatch for running around locally and occasional trip south. Cheap insurance, reliability and running costs are important. We are looking at Fiesta type say 1.2. We can consider buying in Hampshire or in Leeds, private or through a dealer.

I can't make a make/model recommendation in this price bracket because a make/model with a good reputation could be overpriced and bad, while a make/model with a poor reputation could be fine and a much better buy. If looking at Fiestas, the 1.25 is the best engine, but check carefully for rust, especially the front roof pillars. Don't buy from a dealer, though. At this price level, only buy privately from someone who has owned the car for at least two years. Insurance will definitely not be cheap.
