I have cira £10,000 to spend on a smallish estate (replacing an 156 Sportswagon). I fancy an Audi (A4 or A6), Merc (E-Class), Skoda or maybe an Alfa (159 Sportswagon). Reliability and cheap running costs (fuel) are my main concerns and I plan to keep the car for 5 yrs++ service at an independent specialist and will do lowish mileage.

Then you don't want a diesel. £10k is danger money with Mercs. Forget the Alfa. Audis are belt cam. Possibly a BMW E91 3 Series 318i or 320i Touring.
