Vauxhall Astra 1.9 CDTi fault

Our Astra came to a gradual stop, the ESP and ABS lights came on and the steering went heavy and it stalled. We tried to restart it but there was a clicking sound. We called for recovery who jump started the car but as we tried to drive off steering was heavy and we could not steer the car. He checked and said it's not the alternator, it's the belt, then checked the belt and said there's not enough tension and it needs a new one.

Failed alternator. Very common after the cold weather and the long Chrismas/New Year holiday.

Even though alternator and battery have been changed and replaced the alternator light is showing intermittently and don't know what else this could be causing the problem.
