Suggested replacement for Passat

After nine delighted years with our Volkswagen Passat 1.8T Estate, we realise it's now bigger than we need, and with petrol prices going through the roof, we'd better downsize. Can you recommend something smaller, but with acceleration (turbo?), versatility and comfort? A five-door might do, but which ones have zest?

The SEAT Leon FR with the 2.0T petrol engine. It can do up to 35mpg and is the same basic engine as the Passat with 2000cc but with 40PS more.
