VW Golf Mk3 engine problem

I own a 1995 Volkswagen Golf MK3 1.8 cabriolet. I have recently discovered brown foaming in the radiator expansion chamber. The temperature guage inside the car goes up to 70 quite quickly and the warning light flashes. But it doesnt rise any further. There is no brown gunk on the inside of the oil filler cap either. The engine runs fine and the heater works with no problems. Any ideas?

Flush the entire radiator and heating system, replace the coolant and see if you have got rid of the problem.
